Donnie Yen, The time has finally come with the help of a Master.
Ok I have to admit I slept on Donnie Yen, I wasn't a big fan of his early work, because he seemed like another Bruce Lee wannabe.
I remember the first time I saw him was on a television program on cable called 'Fist of Fury' in the 1990's. This was a remake of
Bruce Lee's
movie
"The Chinese Connection".
In my opinion this program was garbage, the production seemed artificial to me, the fight scenes were too fast and I wasn't sold on Donnie as a Kung fu actor.
Then I saw the movie "Iron Monkey" It was a much better performance from Yen in this one. Although I'm still not a big fan of the super fast pace punching and kicking that him and Jet Li made popular at that time.
The movie that caught my attention of Yen was "FlashPoint"(2007). His performance in this film was great. I love the way he incorporated Mixed Martial Arts into the fight scenes.
From then on for me, Donnie wasn't afraid of stepping outside the box as a Martial Arts Actor, and it let me know that he's the type of actor that keeps a hand on the pulse of his audience. Knowing that mixed martial arts, (the ultimate in self defense techniques) is popular was the perfect ingredient for a modern day
martial arts film
. I know it's late but "FlashPoint" is when I became a Fan of Donnie Yen.
I have finally seen
"Ip Man"
and "Ip Man 2" and he was terrific in them both. I think it will be the defining performances of his career.
It's interesting to know that he has always had a lot of the same philosophies as Bruce Lee and so its appropriate that he ended up making a movie about his Master teacher.
There's a lot I don't know about Donnie Yen
but its not going to take long because I know there are some of you out there that can help me appreciate him much more.
But, I'm the type that likes to always know more, so while I'm continuing building this site, any input would definitely help me out. Feel free to create your own page about Donnie Yen or any of your favorite
Kung Fu legends
, the more the merrier.
