The First of Bruce Lee's Chinese Kung Fu Movies: "Fists of Fury" aka "The Big Boss"
"Fists of Fury" aka "The Big Boss" is one of the best Kung Fu movies ever made. It was the first of the Chinese Kung Fu movies starring
Bruce Lee
that I had ever seen. I was around 13yrs old when my big sister took me to it.
She had already seen "Fists of Fury", so she was telling me all about how cool Bruce was and how this was going to be the best Kung Fu movie I ever saw. I think she was crushing on
Bruce Lee, personally.
Settled in my seat in the movie theater the first thing that appeared on the screen was the Golden Harvest emblem, then the movie intro music came on with Bruce Lee flying across the screen, now I was getting excited maybe this was going to be one the best kung fu movies ever.
Once the movie started, I witnessed Bruce Lee in full force for the first time. he got off a boat with his uncle who is telling Bruce (Cheng) that he's not suppose to get into any fights.
Of course that doesn't last long. Cheng's cousin Shu Shan gets into a fight with some thugs, and right away Cheng gets in a couple of thunderous punches.
As with some Chinese Kung fu movies this one is slow in the beginning, but the story picks up when Cheng is provoked into his first fight to then become the foreman himself of an ice company.
Cheng then tries to get answers to why some of his relatives who work for the company are missing.
The Boss of the company creates all kinds of excuses to waste time until Cheng finds the evidence for himself.
Cheng then finds out some really bad news that I won't tell you in case you haven't seen the movie yet.
Now Cheng is faced to fight the Boss's son and his henchmen. He doesn't play around. He takes them out with the vicious punches and kicks that cemented Bruce Lee as China's newest Kung Fu star.
The end fight scene between Cheng and the Boss is classic Kung Fu movie madness at its best. solidifying "Fists of Fury" as one of the best Kung Fu movies ever made.
My favorite part is when the Boss throws a knife at Cheng and Cheng, while laying on the ground, kicks the knife back and it hits the Boss in the stomach.
It was so cool to learn that Bruce Lee had hand picked
Lam Ching Ying
to help work on this film and really got Lam Ching Ying's career going because of it.
"The Big Boss" wasn't Lee's best film but it would set the standard for Chinese Martial Arts films and would end up being one of my favorite classic Kung Fu movies of all time.
I'm always interested in the opinions of other Kung Fu Movie fans. Did you enjoy this movie? Did it bug the heck out of you? I want to know what you thought about it.
