Lo Lieh, One of Kung Fu's Greatest Actors. Who says He's a Bad Guy?
Lo Lieh was born in Indonesia and was named Wong Lap-Dat.
He was the type of actor that could play both a good and bad guy but his star shined most as the leading bad guy in most Kung Fu films.
When I was a young teenager I hated to see him coming. Yes, those piercing eyes and menacing grin, property of one of Kung Fu's most charismatic Legends.
Lieh appeared in several HK films in the mid 1960’s "Tiger Boy" "Golden Swallow" and "Temple of the Red Lotus". In the beginning, he was a good guy in movies and his 1972 film "King Boxer", aka "5 Fingers of Death", made him an internationally star.
5 Fingers of Death was the first Kung Fu film to have an international release, even before Bruce Lee's Big Boss released the year before.
After King Boxer Lieh would go on to make many classics like
"36th Chambers of Shaolin"
, "Chinese Boxer", "Executioners from Shaolin", "Fatal Needles vs Fatal Fist" where
Lo Lieh co-starred with Don Wong
, and a host of other great films.
As I've gotten older I can't help but root for him in most of his movies that he plays the villain in.
Lieh died on November 2, 2002 of a heart attack at the age of 63. He Left behind a long successful film legacy and thousands of fans that still appreciate the artistry he left behind.
I'm always interested in the opinions of other Kung Fu movie fans. So if this actor / martial artist is or isn't on your "Best Kung Fu Legend" list I want to know.
