"Return of the Dragon" Bruce Lee unleashes one of his classic martial arts movies , His Way
" Return of the Dragon " aka (Way of the Dragon) was written, directed and starred Bruce Lee in 1972 through Golden Harvest Films. This was Bruce Lee's third film.
Tang Lung (
Bruce Lee
) is sent to Rome to help out at a restaurant owned by friends of his family. The restaurant is wanted by the Mob, but the owner refuses to sell to them,so the Mob starts to intimidate the owner and his workers.
Tang Lung is there to help, but no one knows he can fight until the Mob sends its thugs to beat up on the workers. That's when Tang Lung demonstrates Chinese Boxing. Until this point Tang didn't seem to fit in but after his display butt kicking, he becomes the restaurants favorite.
The Mob eventually gets tired of Tang beating up their men so they send for 3 top fighter to take care of the matter.
The first two fighters are Ing-Sik Whang and Bob Wall, they are what you would call 'the appetizers'. Until we meet Colt who is pleyed by the one, the only, Chuck Norris.
Chuck didn't do much talking in this film, probably because he was new to the industry and just couldn't act. But the finale between him and Bruce is classic Martial arts fighting at its best.
This movie starts slow but that's ok because the build up to the final fight scene makes it all worth while.
I think this is a good movie, but it's not until the ending fight scene that this film becomes one of Bruce Lee's
classic martial arts movies
.
Bruce had his hands in a lot of areas of making this film and it was his first time as a director. I often wonder what his career would have been like if he could have made a quarter of the films Jackie Chan made. Imagine if he had a chance to hone his directing skills.
"Return of the Dragon" is one of Lee's films were you get to see a lighter side of his acting. There are lines in this film that I still remember, like 'the Chinese spare ribs' line.
"Return of the Dragon" is my 3rd favorite overall Lee film but ranks first for the one on one fight scenes. Regardless of which of his films you like best, Bruce Lee always leaves something in his films for you to remember his greatness.
Let's hope
"Kung Fu Hustle"
star Stephen Chows upcoming remake of "Return of the Dragon" called "Tai Chi" can hold the test of time that Lee's film has.
I suppose That depends how much of a remake it really is.
