Do you know this classic?

From what I can remember: There were many characters (good and bad, of course!) but I can only remember a man with shoulder-length hair with a top ponytail, wearing white clothes (possibly middle class) played an undercover government cop who was on the search for a specific gold treasure, which was later to be found inside an old, dead tree. Along the way, he encountered a beggar, whose name was Eng dubbed "Dirty Cat." Since Dirty Cat was a beggar, he was poor and always mischevious and cunning, in order to obtain precious resources. I remember a few specific scenes with one where he pulled out an old man's dentures which had a few golden teeth, after the man was killed in a fight. I also remember (one of my fav scenese) Dirty Cat was fishing and caught about 5-6 big fish and he stuck a straight branch through all the gills of the fish, grilling them over a fire. Dirty Cat then shook some spices over the fish (made me drool at the time!) After Dirty Cat left for a few minutes, the man in white (above) secretly snuck through the tall grasses and saw the fish and at them all. Throughout the movie, the man in white and Dirty Cat learned to tolerate each other, each seeking his own treasures.

If you know this movie and the title, please reply asap. I do truly appreciate it.
