The History of KungFu is more than just a fighting style where techniques and stuff are used.
KungFu is a way of life with the general meaning being 'accomplished person’ or ‘mastery through time and effort’.
Practicing KungFu teaches discipline, as well as health, patience, and self knowing.
Its roots can be traced to China in late 2000 BC under Emperor Huang Ti where early martial art methods were used mainly for defensive purposes and fighting strategies.
Around 600 BC, when Confucianism and Taoism emerged, those monks used Cong Fu / Go Ti methods to learn how to be more balanced in their daily lives.
From what I’ve learned around 520 AD, Bodhi Dharma was the one who first brought martial arts to the Shaolin Temple.
His purpose was so that the monks would have more energy and would be able to perform their daily tasks and studies a lot more efficiently.
The Shaolin monks didn’t have a lot of physical energy and were falling asleep during lectures and meditation classes.
Another reason the Shaolin monks learned KungFu was because they needed to protect themselves from bandits and government officials.
A good depiction of this is represented in the Shaw Brothers Kung Fu film
"36th Chamber of Shaolin"
.
As time went on as the Shaolin monks were learning KungFu martial arts which were inspired by nature, they went into a deeper study of nature’s creatures such as Tiger, Snake, Dragon, Leopard, Monkey, Praying Mantis, and Crane.
