Ip Man 3 movie, A 3rd movie about the Wing Chun Kung Fu Legend wins with flying colors ... again.
This is my response to all of the people who saw Ip Man 3 and complained about Donnie Yen not being in the movie or expecting the performance Dennis To to be
Donnie Yen
. USE YOUR IMAGINATION, This is what you have to do sometimes when you see a Kung Fu movie made in China and that's not a bad thing either. See, most of us in the U.S. get too caught up on the way we think a movie should be made and that's because of the conditioning we've developed from watching Hollywood movies. Well, I will tell you , you can't come into these movies expecting a
Hollywood
production or expecting that the movie will turn out the way you think it should. Now this, my friends, is my attempt to merge those who are new to this genre to those who have experience and have an appreciation for
classic Kung Fu movies
. Ip Man 3 is one of those movies that has the old school storyline and set up. Basically they took parts of the genuine story from Ip Chun father's past, and incorporated a little artistic freedom in the movie to keep you the viewer glued to the film. For example you had Wong Fei Hong movies which where played by Kwan Tak Hing,
Jet Li
,
Jackie Chan
and others. Each actor put their own twist on the character and the character was in a number of movies but none of them were related.
They took the legendary persona of Wong Fei Hong and used him as the launching point for lots of stories. That doesn't make one movie better than the other. There just different. Ip Man 3 was good in its own right. No, it didn't have Donnie Yen in it it had Dennis To who I believe played a good young Ip Man considering this as his first major role. You have to remember the first two movies were done by a seasoned well experienced Donnie Yen and he was superb in both films. I can remember when I saw one of Donnie's first works and I was not impressed. It took
"Flash Point"
before I could get into Donnie's films and that spurred me to look at some of his older films and appreciate him more. This is an example of how it takes time to adjust to a new actor. It also takes time to adjust to someone playing a role that has been played by a more famous actor first. There are plenty of examples in Hollywood movies doing this. Donnie refused to perform in anymore Ip Man movies anyways. Besides, Donnie was too old to play this young Ip Man. I think they did a good job casting because Dennis To pulls off playing a younger Donnie Yen.
Ip Man 3 has an all star cast including the great Ip Chun, son of Ip Man. Ip Chun plays Leung Bik , Ip man's martial arts uncle aka third teacher. His performance was great. He brought a fun, authentic energy to the film that reminded me of the classic movies with the teacher confronting the student then eventually taking the student as a pupil and training him. Also, you have the great
Sammo Hung
and
Yuen Biao
who give superb performances in this film. It amazes me how these guys still perform with such grace and speed even at there age. To me it's always an honor to watch these Masters at work. The one thing about Ip Man 3 I did question was whether or not the parts in the movie about the brother Ip Tin-Chi being a spy was true or not. And if the whole fight with the Japanese mob was authentic or not. But really it doesn't matter because I went into this movie not expecting anything because I'm so us to seeing remakes and sequels made here in the U.S that suck. (Thank God
"Karate Kid"
2010 didn't) So if you want to see a good Kung Fu movie depicting the character Ip Man who was master to the one and only King of Kung Fu
Bruce Lee
, then I will suggest you buy this movie because it is a movie full of action and drama. All in all Ip Man 3 is a Kung Fu movie you should watch with an open mind and imagination. This is a great movie on it's own. And should be judged as such. OTHER PAGES YOU WILL LOVE:
