What I like about Lau is that everything he touch has his authentic style imprinted into what ever he does. I love to watch him fight, he sometimes does this hesitating effect incorporated into his Kung Fu moves which make what he do look so cool.
His father Lam Cham was a martial arts master whose teachers teacher was the great Wong Fei Hung. He also has another brother who is a great martial artist named Lau Kar Wing
Lau didn't act in many films, but decided to use his adopted brother Gordon Liu in some of the films he directed. He felt Gordon had a better face and since Gordon studied under him he was perfect for the job.
Some of my favorite movies Lau acted in are,
"Mad Monkey Kung Fu"
, "Challenge of the Masters" ,"Invincible Pole Fighter" and "Drunken Master II".
As a director I would say "Dirty Ho", "Fist of the White Lotus", "36th Chamber of Shaolin" and "Shaolin Mantis".
Lau recently received a Life Time Achievement Award in Hong Kong this year. It's an award I felt he well deserved since he's worked in the business for over 50 years.
There's so much more that I can say about this martial arts legend, but I'm not, go see for yourself. A man who puts everything he believes into his work, whether its moral standards in the story of a movie or the correct way to do a fight scene Lau Kar Leung's imprint will always be remembered.
