need to know the title....

I dont remember the title, but saw it as a kid in the mid 70's... all I remember is the last fight scene. the hero is invited to eat dinner at the home of the gang that has been terrorizing the town. at one point they all pull out knives and attack him alone, of which they manage to kill him. afterwards, the towns people that the hero trained to defend themselves attack the gang and avenge the hero. does anyone know the name of the movie? I remember also that in the training parts, he made them strike sand in a jar with their hands...
