Yuen Qiu (aka Phoenix Kim)

Miss Qiu is a classic Kung Fu movie Legend, even though she isn't necessarily that old.

She began her career at 7 years old as many legendary Kung Fu movie actors did, by joining the Peking Opera School run by Master Yuen. He was the one to name her Yuen Qiu.

She schooled along side Sammo Hung, JackieChan and Yuen Biao, which should give you an idea of why her talent is so great.

She worked with Jackie in 1973 on "Rumble in Hong Kong". In 1974 she had a small part in the James Bond film "The Man with the Golden Gun".

1975 she appeared in "The Death of Bruce Lee", 1978 "Dragon Lee vs 5 Brothers" and many more.

You may remember her from "New Tales of the Flying Fox" in 1984 or "Disciples of the 36th Chamber" 1985.

But due to the frustration of real gender inequalities she retired from Kung Fu movies to get married and have a family.

Luckily, for us she reappeared in 2004 with "Kung Fu Hustle". Apparently she had gone with a friend to her audtion for the movie.

Kim sat in the waiting room with a cigarette and newspaper just relaxing. Director Stephen Chow saw her sitting there. Recognized her, of course and asked the retired actress to show him a few 'smoking poses'.

Chow offered her the part and she was obligated to gain a lot of weight for the film. Fortunately coming out of retirement payed off because she was rewarded with a Hong Kong Film Award nomination for Best Actress.

Marking her triumphant return to the Kung Fu movie industry after 20 years.
